This North American Blue Jay caught my attention not for its lovely color, but rather, for some atypical behavior that I can only describe as ‘lost’. My best guess is that he (or she) is a young adult getting used to being on its own.
We feel very protective of the birds and critters that share our landscape so we kept a watchful eye on this little one just to be sure it was okay. The juvenile jay spent hours quietly checking out its surroundings and eventually made its way to our combo suet/seed feeder. After a quick meal and a drink from the birdbath, it went to preen and rest in the dense branches of the nearby arborvitae.
With nightfall approaching, it was time for us to head inside and let Mother Nature take the night watch. Sigh.
Sleep tight, little jay!
