The way the animals and birds handle our winter weather really amazes me. It has been so very cold, but they just don’t seem to mind at all.

Each morning, as soon as I open the sliding glass door, all come running as they know breakfast is soon to follow. Bluejays and titmice go right for the peanuts (dodging squirrels in the process) while the sparrows, juncos, chickadees and finches seem to stick with the seed and cracked corn.

Most of the birds fly in and retreat quickly with their bounty, but these two little House Sparrows were perfectly content sitting on a low hemlock branch about 18 inches above the snow, catching what little sun they could and watching the chaos occurring below them.

Snow Birds

With the snow-reflected light setting them a-glow, I couldn’t resist snapping a photo. Sigh. I hope I never get tired of moments like this.

Same time, same place tomorrow little critters!

  1. Love the sharpness of the birds here, against the stark winter sky

    • Thanks, Karma! 🙂

Believe it or not, that isn’t sky in the background but snow! (I was shooting down at them while they sat on a very low-to-the-ground branch).
