Winter Blue

“Winter Blue” (North American Blue Jay) Nikon D300, 360mm, F/4, 1/160s, -0.7EV, ISO 400

Blue Jays, that is! 🙂

Not the nicest of birds, but they sure are one of the prettiest and not as camera-shy as the male North American Cardinal, whom to date, has successfully eluded my lens!

Did you know, the pronounced crest of feathers on their head is an indicator of their mood?

According to Wikipedia, when a jay is relaxed, the crest is flattened against the head; when a jay is excited or acting aggressive, the crest  forms a prominent peak. And, if frightened, the crest bristles outwards like a bottle brush.

Now, I cannot determine exactly from the crest alone which mood this jay is in, but one look at that eye and my best guess is full intimidation mode!

  1. All indications from the photo above point to the fact the mood of this jay is ……………………..…… blue.

    • Ha! Thanks for explaining the obvious that I missed, Rupe! 🙂

  2. Ah, just awesome!

Don’t know why, but I just imagined this jay wearing some bling… kinda like Mr. T.
