How adorable is this guy??

“Cuteus Maximus” (American Red Squirrel, Male) Nikon D300, 1000mm (600mm w/1.7x teleconverter), F/6.7, 1/125s, ISO 1250

I hope I never tire of photographing these critters! πŸ™‚

  1. Awsome photo. Great name. I would have probably gone with something in pig latin.

I love the details of the fur on the brow.

I never would have guessed (or not known) how many whiskers they have!

    Just a great, great picture.

    • Thanks, Babe! I know you love these li’l guys as much as I do!

  2. Why, oh why, can Rupe only think of “Inglorious Basterds” right now?

COL LANDA: “… Yet I assume you don’t share the same animosity with squirrels that you do with rats, do you?”

    PERRIER: “No.”

COL LANDA: “Yet, they are both rodent’s, are they not? And except for the fact that one has a big bushy tail, while the other has a long repugnt tail of rodent skin, they even rather look alike, don’t they?”

    Regardless ….. excellent effort.

    • Ha! But the funny thing is, I don’t have any animosity towards rats! We used to have one that would come to the feeder…I named him ‘Templeton’ (ref. Charlotte’s Web).

      Regardless, thanks Rupe! πŸ™‚

  3. The colors are wonderful. I really like how they pop.

    “Cuteus Maximus”

Very cool! That would look really well on a T-shirt πŸ™‚

    • Ha! Hmmm, now there’s a thought! Folks walkin’ around with an adorable red squirrel on their chest and the words “Cuteus Maximus”? Works for me! πŸ™‚

      Thanks, Juan!

      • And expanding the idea a tad bit, on the back the t-shirt could have your URL.

  4. Wow…now there’s a character. Red squirrels are cute. Hmmm..I think you could start a line of t-shirts with this photo and Juan’s new latin naming.

    • Red squirrels are feisty little characters for sure!

Hey, now Scott, I will admit that Juan had the t-shirt idea, but as for ‘Cuteus Maximus’, well, that was all ME!πŸ™‚

      • Whoops..sorry. When will the shirts, t-shirts, mugs, etc. be ready? You know it’s done since you go to Disney. LOL

      • yeah, I wish I was that creative… 😳

      • Don’t be so modest Juan!

      • No harm, no foul Scott. πŸ™‚

I’m actually sort of a purist when it comes to this stuff… I’ve always thought ‘fine art’ shouldn’t be on t-shirts, mugs, etc. but what do I know? If that’s what the public wants and what will bring in the $$, then I may need to reconsider!

  5. Now that is a real cutie. Love it.

  6. My daughter bought a 1940’s cookbook this weekend that had a recipe for “Three Squirrel Stew”. Honest. I would tell this little guy to run for the hills!!!!! How close were you to him?

    • WOW, now that is strange, Kim! This little guy has no worries…they are a feisty bunch and I wouldn’t dare try and catch one! They chase the grey squirrels around our yard and the grey’s are three times their size! Hmmm, I’d say I was 25 feet from the critter (it’s a really big lens and the teleconverter gets me even closer!) πŸ™‚

  7. I hope you never tire of photographing them, too. That is a sharp setup.

    • Aw, thank you burst (can I call you burst?) Much appreciated!

I always tell my students to photograph what they love and it will come thru in their images!

  8. VERY cute! Much cuter than the squirrels we have here.

    • Yeah, they ARE really, really cute! Sort of like chipmunks on steroids! Very entertaining to watch.

We are very excited as we saw one Little Red (that is what we call them) go into our large birdhouse! So, we imagine there is a nest! If (and that is a big IF) I get the chance to photograph red squirrel babies, well, now, I will probably just about pee my pants!! LOL!

  9. No denying, he’s cute alright. Look at how round and beady his eyes are, though! I wonder why I never see red squirrels around here, only gray…?

    • Oh, he is a mischieveous one – no doubt! (hence the beady eyes πŸ™‚ ) We didn’t see them until about 7 years ago. I think they were on the brink of extinction for awhile there, between predators and some virus that is fatal to them. About two years ago, we counted 9 of them in our landscape and then Poof! They all but disappeared (we suspect the onslaught of red-tailed hawks). We are certainly pleased to see them making their return!

  10. OMG, CUTE OVERLOAD!!!! Love this ;)It’s really an awesome shot.

    • Well, I think that just about says it all! πŸ™‚

      Thank you, Amber!

  11. the newer little birdies are nice, but this guy is awesome! the blast of color in his tail and the different levels of depth of field are perfecto. and now, since it seems i must comment on how cute he is: what a patootie!!

    • You always crack me up, Stephen! I know alot of folks don’t like these guys but we just can’t help ourselves!
      Thanks! πŸ™‚

  12. Great shot, you got him just at the right moment. I love his expression.

    • Thanks! Yeah, that’s what taking a gazillion shots over the course of an afternoon will get ya! πŸ™‚

  13. Ooooh I love him to bits! This photo is just jumping with colour, crispness and sharp definition, it’s wonderful to see a photo taken from this angle too, rather than the side view that I mostly see of squirrels. I think that ALL the amazing detail is what makes this photo pop, the whiskers, the nose and eyes… wonderful, wonderful photo, Bravo!

    • Thanks, kiwidutch! I LOVE your enthusiasm! Makes my day for sure.

Oh, I captured ALOT of the side angle shots you mention. Takes patience to wait as long as I do for THE shot (and sometimes it doesn’t come). This day? I got lucky! πŸ™‚

  14. Very adorable indeed.

  15. Absolutely adorable!! I wonder if he would feel in good campany with ours…he looks a little different.

    • Thanks! He actually is different than yours. I’ve been reading up on the Red Squirrel species and they don’t cross territories so we all have a slightly different version. How cool is that? πŸ™‚

  16. I think you have many great photos here on your blog (and I have now just been looking at the latest posts – soon when I have more time I look more!) – this one is just a unique one – I love it (like many others) – I would be happy wearing a t-shirt with this fellow πŸ™‚

    • Why, thank you! I’m always pleased to see a new face viewing and commenting, so welcome! πŸ™‚ The t-shirt idea seems to be popular – one to think about for sure! I hope you stop by again!
