"Junk in the Trunk" (Living Tree Trunk grown around Automobile Steering Column) Nikon D300, 56mm, F/7.1, 1/160s, -1.0EV, ISO 640, SB800 w/Gary Fong Lightsphere Cloud

Up against a concrete wall, in the farthest corner of a secondary parking lot for the local commuter rail, stands a remarkable tree. What makes it remarkable is the fact that, over the course of 30-40 years, its trunk has grown around an abandoned steering column.

Up until last week, I didn’t know about this tree and never would have known about it if it weren’t for our buddy, Chris (local Meineke owner and self-proclaimed ‘grease monkey’). My husband was at the shop with my Jeep when Chris said, “you gotta come see this tree – your wife will love it.” Turns out, he was right. 🙂

From what I understand, a very long time ago, this area was home to a junk yard (which certainly explains the random automobile parts still scattered along the perimeter of the lot). Chris has known about the tree for years as his shop is only a block away. So, why the sudden interest now?

Seems the lot has been sold, so the tree will be coming down to make way for a parking garage. Sigh. In a way, I find it somewhat sad that this resilient tree, which endured decades of hardship through the carelessness of man, will now ultimately meet its end at the hands of man.

So, while certainly not in the realm of images I usually take, I simply could not pass up the opportunity to capture something this unique for posterity!
